Golf Mental Training The Power of Visualization
Best Practices on the Golf Range
Golf tips for how to discover the power of visualization for your golf game improvement. Many golfers spend a lot of time on the practice range, but far too few do so with a plan any more in-depth than “hit a large bucket of balls,” or perhaps “hit a large bucket of balls with my seven iron until I actually hit one straight.” That kind of effort won’t do as much to help you as when you bring your brain along to the practice area with you. To get the most out of that bucket of balls, it helps to use visualization techniques to make the time more akin to the situations you will face on the golf course.
Discover the Power of Visualization
For starters in the discovery of the power of visualization, you want to treat the practice session similarly to your actual game. That means as few outside distractions as possible. Don’t go with a friend if you are going to chat about work or sports or the poor saps who couldn’t get away from the other demands on their time to join you. That just leads to a lack of mental focus on the practice session, and soon the bucket will be done and you’ll have no idea where the golf balls went. Also, leave the iPod at home, unless you’re using it purely as a “don’t talk to me!” sign and have it turned off. It’s not like you play your rounds with Kelly Clarkson and Carrie Underwood streaming through your ears, so don’t practice that way either.
Focus on your Purpose
Once you have your bucket of balls and your designated hitting area, mentally focus on what the purpose of your session is. If you’re working with one particular golf club, like that seven iron, don’t just furiously whack balls like a machine gun until they are all used up. Pretend that you are out on the golf course, aiming for a fixed target, and execute your golf swing.
Refine Your Pre-Shot Routine
Finally, you might also want to use the time to refine your pre-shot routine. That will make the practice session take longer, but it will also increase its utility. The more you treat every range ball like it’s your Titleist Pro VI, the more those Pro VI’s will be flying where you want them to once your golf strokes count for real.
