Golf Improvement Tips

Make a Plan for your Round

Golf tips for making your round of golf more enjoyable and more advanced. Simply, mentally train yourself to include this one basic way to improve your golf score, by starting every hole with a plan. Take everything into account, from the distance to the layout to the current state of your game, and plan your strategy accordingly.

Before hitting your drive, visualize how you hope and expect your shots to play out. Don’t just look at how far you’ll hit it off the tee, but also where you want it to land to get the best possible second shot. Then, picture what golf club you want to use on your second shot, and continue that until you are on the putting green.

In conducting this exercise, be sure to take into account any hazards. If there’s water 200 yards away from the tee, for example, will you try to carry it or lay up? Are there any bunkers guarding the green? Does the golf hole penalize anyone who gets too aggressive, or is it set up to reward only those willing to take a chance with a grip it and rip it approach? Is the pin in a location that encourages golfers to attack, or is it on the edge of the green where a mishit golf shot could land in the water?

Consider the Weather

Also, be mindful of the weather. Is it windy enough to require a different club than usual to manage your distance? Have drought-like conditions left the fairway playing like an asphalt road that will allow your drive to bounce and roll an extra 20 yards? Are you playing after a rainstorm that has left the fairway filled with standing water that ensures where your ball lands will be where you’ll be hitting your next shot?

And finally, take a realistic look at your own golf game. If you’ve struggled off the tee and aren’t confident in your driver any more, think about how your approach to the golf hole changes if you tee off with an iron. On a long par four, maybe that means you are better off hitting a seven-iron that leaves you a manageable chance at an up-and-down par save instead of once again bringing out the five-iron that has let you down all day.

Lower your Scores

Mentally stepping through the golf tips mentioned above will prepare you for each golf hole before you take your first golf swing, which should lead to increased confidence and (hopefully) lower scores.
