GOLF TERMINOLOGY beginning with the letter A



ACE - hole-in-one; a shot from the tee ending up in the cup in one stroke. Eagle on par 3.

ADDRESS - golfer’s body and golf club in position to play a stroke; different from grounding the golf club. There are some strokes where a golfer only wants to address the golf ball for the shot without grounding the golf club.

AIR SHOT - swing with the intention of hitting the ball, but miss the ball; whiff; counts one stroke.

ALBATROSS - three strokes under par for a hole. Two strokes to get the golf ball in the cup on a par 5 hole. Also called a double-eagle.

ALIGNMENT - the position of a golfer's body at address in relation to the target.

ALL SQUARE - the golf term used in match play when the opponents have won the same number of holes and are tied.

ALTERNATE STROKE - traditional golf game in which two golfing partners alternate turns playing the golf shot. Played in Ryder Cup international professional matches, and Walker Cup and Curtis Cup amateur matches. Twosome

AMATEUR GOLFER - a golfer who plays golf for pleasure rather than a golfer who plays golf for money or as a profession.

AMBROSE - a golf game within the foursome where the best shot off the tee is used by the other golfers. The four golfers hit from that spot, and so on. Also known as a Texas Scramble.

ANGLE OF APPROACH - during the golf swing, the angle of the club face at impact in relation to the golf ball. The angle affects the spin and trajectory of the golf ball flight.

APPROACH SHOT - a golf shot made with the intention of landing the golf ball on the putting green.

APRON - the grass surrounding the putting green, not cut as close as the grass on the putting green, but cut closer than the fairway grass. Also known as the fringe.

AWAY - golfer whose ball is the furthest from the cup and is the next shot to be played.

In the picture to the left the yellow golf ball is said to be away, and that golfer should putt next. The white golf ball should be marked.

A golfer’s ball on the putting green could be away, while another golfer’s ball is not yet on the putting green.

BACK NINE - the second 9 hole of an 18 hole golf course. Holes 10 through 18.

BACK TEES - teeing ground furthest from the cup. The longest yardage that can be played for a given golf course.

BACK SPIN - the backwards rotation of the golf ball in the air caused from a golf club’s grooves on the clubface striking the ball. The intention is to control the roll of the golf ball when it lands on the putting green.

BACK-SWING - when a golfer swings the golf club back from address and up to the top before the golf club starts coming down. The golf swing from take-away at address to being set at the top. Sometimes called backstroke.

BALATA - made from the gum of a balata tree, a covering for rubber cored golf balls.

BANANA BALL - slice; for a left-handed golfer a shot that curves left, and for a right-handed golfer a shot that curves right. Usually occurs as a result of executing the shot on an outside to inside swing plane through the impact zone.

BANK SHOT - when the face of a steep bank is used as a target for a pitch golf shot to bounce over the bank.

BARRANCA - typically a rocky ravine or water marked as a hazard found on some golf courses.

BASEBALL GRIP - grip on the golf club when the hands are touching with no overlapping or interlocking of the fingers.

BEND - a fade or draw golf shot; a golf shot with side spin so it curves.

BENT - a type of grass typically used for the putting greens.

BEST BALL - for a single hole, the lowest score of a two golfer partnership within the foursome, or the lowest score of the foursome. An ideal game for golfers with high handicaps to bring their score down to the best score of the twosome or foursome for the hole. Twosome is sometimes called better ball.

BETWEEN THE MARKERS - on the teeing ground the imaginary straight line between the markers where the golf ball can placed on a tee for striking. If a stroke is taken with the golf ball teed in front of the straight line between the markers, it is a one stroke penalty and loss of that stroke. The golfer must re-tee the golf ball between the markers or up to two club lengths straight behind the markers.

BISQUE - a handicap stroke given by one golfer to another golfer. The golfer receiving the bisque must declare which hole it will be used on before playing that hole.

BITE - an approach shot to the putting green that when the golf ball lands it stops dead or spins back. Usually a pitch shot or short iron shot with backspin. The ball can hop forward before it bites.

BLADE PUTTER - metal putter with a straight face and a square top edge. This style can have also have a flange at the bottom.

BLADE SHOT - a miss hit golf shot when the leading edge of an iron golf club is used to hit the golf shot. The ball flies off the golf club as a line drive.

BLAST SHOT - a forceful shot in the bunker or muddy area where when the ball is struck the sand or mud explodes around the impact of the shot, but mainly in front of the shot in the direction of the golf ball’s flight.

BLIND SHOT - a shot where the golfer cannot see where the hole, putting green or hazard is located when hitting the golf shot.

BLOCK - during the golf swing when the golfer stops the wrists from rotating square at impact due to wanting to keep the club face open to play a slice shot.

BOGEY - one stroke over par for a hole. Five strokes to get the golf ball in the cup on a par 4 hole. Also called a boge.
