Golf Swing Instruction

Stop Topping the Golf Ball

Golf swing instruction for the average Joe or Joanne...

How many golfers out there have found themselves in the following situation: You’ve just hit a huge drive on a short par four, have a short iron to get to the green and a birdie opportunity … and proceed to top the ball. Based on my anecdotal evidence, that leads to more profanities and thrown clubs than any other golf shot.

The most common cause of a topped ball is a golfer coming out of the stroke too early. It’s a natural reaction borne of impatience – when you’re eager to look and see where your shot is going, you lift your head up before completing the stroke. That moves your shoulders, arms and hands up as well, which in turn jerks the golf club up early. All of that culminates with contact taking place at the top of the golf ball, which generates very little distance.

Use a Coin or Ball Marker

Some golf swing instruction to avoid that is to focus on hitting a spot just behind the golf ball. One drill is to put a coin or ball marker immediately behind the ball, and focus on that as you complete your golf swing. Do that long enough, and keeping your head down should be second nature.

If it starts happening again on the course, the first thing to do is to make sure the rest of your foursome is paying attention when you’re ready to hit, and can watch where the golf ball goes. It may seem basic, but a common impetus for golfers lifting their heads early is the desire to track their ball flight so they can find it easily. But what’s the point in playing with others if you aren’t willing to put them to work?

Practice Swings using Golf Swing Mechanics

Next, take a couple of practice swings bearing in mind your reliable golf swing mechanics by focusing on your shoulders. Make sure your shoulder turn hasn’t been exaggerated, since that can pop your head out of its proper place.

Once that is done, challenge yourself to watch your divot. Doing that requires you to keep your eyes low, which should help your head stay steady and ensure contact at the proper place, avoiding those ugly topped shots and lowering your blood pressure accordingly.
