Understanding and TrackingIn the early 20th Century, the USGA Golf Handicap System was established in order for golfers of various skill levels to compete on an equal basis. The Golf Handicap System enables each golfer to acquire a Handicap Index, which can then be applied to any golf course to be played from any tees.Imagine someone who usually has a score of 92 trying to compete with a golfer who usually scores 74. In order for these two golfers to compete on an equal and fair basis each golfer should establish and maintain a Handicap Index so as to determine a Golf Handicap. Having a Handicap Index allows a calculated number of strokes, to be given on certain holes, to the less skilled golfer making the rivalry equal. So the less skilled golfer can deduct strokes from his score on certain holes, coming up with an equitable net score for both golfers. Each golfers actual score with no stroke deduction is called their gross score. The more skilled golfer receives no stroke deduction for his round of play. He has the same golf score for his net score as he does for his gross score.
