The Risk Reward Challenge

Here are a few free golf tips to help you to view your next round of golf from about 30,000 feet above the golf course.

One of the great things about golf is that it offers a mental challenge as well as a physical one. Golfers are not just playing against the golf course, but also against themselves.

Golf Tips - Taking Birdie Challenges

A good golf course will tease you by offering opportunities for birdies or spectacular shots, as well as severe penalties for failing to hit those targets. Whether there are a series of deep bunkers surrounding a pin placement that seems to be begging for your approach shot to hit the flag, or a body of water sitting tantalizingly close to the distance you can hit your driver, every round forces a golfer to make decisions between taking the chance at the big payoff or playing it safe and perhaps expecting a lower score as a result.

By definition, the safer play is the one that avoids unnecessary risk … but golf isn’t much fun if you just lay up every time. It’s more than OK to roll up your sleeves and try to beat the course designers at their own game when the situation permits. The trick is to take those risks that play into the strengths of your game, and avoid those that force you to take shots you are less likely to make.

Know Your Strengths and Weaknesses

This is different for every golfer, so take into account your own strengths and weaknesses before deciding to accept the challenge the course designer has prescribed for you. If you’re strong off the tee, maybe you want to try and carry the water if you’re pretty sure a decent drive will be enough to comfortably get you there. Or if you’re having a round where your pitching wedge is flying true and stopping on a dime, don’t worry about those bunkers – attack the flag.

Play each Golf Shot on Your Terms

Taking all of these free golf tips into consideration, remember to play each golf shot on your terms, not the course architect’s. The worse thing you can do is get suckered into a shot that you can’t realistically make, or risk a catastrophic score if the payoff is relatively small. Think of a round of golf like a competition not just the other members of the foursome, but also as something akin to a chess match with the ground itself. Take what the course gives you, and seize what your game allows you to seize on that particular hole, and you may find yourself even more pleased than usual at the 19th hole.
