Picking an Intermediate Target - Free Golf Tips

Too many golfers try to hit each golf shot as far as they can, rationalizing that on a long par five, hitting a three-wood from 300 (or 250 depending on your hitting distance) yards away could leave an easier path onto the green after that. The problems occur when that approach clashes with a particular golfer’s strengths. If you aren’t that confident in your longer clubs, or if the landing zone is narrow enough that staying in the fairway is difficult, you could wind up in worse shape than if you’d just taken out a wedge or a longer iron and taken a more conservative approach to the hole.

That’s why one great free golf tip for course management is to find a distance that you are confident from. Maybe it’s the pitching wedge from 90 yards, or an easy seven-iron from 150 (or 130 depending on your hitting distance). Then, on difficult holes or in situations where you find yourself in trouble, focus on getting the golf ball to that distance rather than attempting a miracle run at the pin.

Doing this greatly simplifies the game. It’s a much better approach than taking a lower-percentage long iron, especially if the reward isn’t worth the risk.

Another Example...

Take another example. You’re sitting in the short rough, 275 yards from the hole, with a lie that doesn’t lend itself to a fairway wood. You could hit a three-iron or four-iron and try to get within 90 yards or so of the putting green – but for most golfers, there’s a greater chance that those golf shots will fly wildly or bounce miserably for a few yards before stopping depressingly close to where it began. Or, you could hit a seven iron more accurately, and give yourself an approximate 150-yard approach from the fairway. The latter strategy plays it safer, which can be a tough pill to swallow for some, but it is also the smarter play for many golfers.

Play with Confidence

This is a great way to play with confidence, because you’ve both selected a specific target and made it a location where you know you can get good results. Rather than just hitting the golf ball as far as you can until it finally lands on the putting green, this is a strategy that can result in easier approach shots, shorter putts, and lower scores.
