Best Golf Tips

A Safer Golf Outing

Here are some of the best golf tips to make for a safe and enjoyable round. Many of the rules for having a safe round of golf are self-evident, like don’t whack anyone else with your four-iron no matter how annoying they are. But there are several rules that can help make sure that everyone leaves the golf course in one piece with all of their facilities intact.

When to Yell FORE!

First, the most basic golf tip is to yell “Fore” when your golf ball appears headed towards another player or group. Don’t be shy while doing so – you want to be loud enough that they can hear you and get out of the way. Golf balls are small, but hard enough to do serious damage if they hit someone at high speeds. Don’t let yourself be the cause of that kind of accident. Don’t tempt fate by hitting into the group in front of you – unless you’re sure they are out of your range. Take an extra practice swing rather than risk hitting someone watching a ball bounce by them as they are lining up a putt. And when you hear someone else yell “Fore,” don’t jerk your head up looking for the ball. Just duck and cover your head.

Be Careful when taking Practice Swings

The main rule regarding taking practice swings is to be very careful while you’re practicing each golf swing. Don’t bring the golf club back until you’re sure nobody else is in the way, and don’t swing the direction of another nearby player, lest you hit twigs or stones at them and cause injury. The biggest place to watch for this is on the tee – drivers have long shafts, and it can be easy to underestimate the length of the swing arc until your backswing hits somebody else’s knee.

Only Play in Good Weather

Plenty of golfers pride themselves on playing in inclement weather. My father-in-law is one who would play in a tornado if it were not actually picking him up from the tee box. While that is fine if the course doesn’t close, the best golf tip I can give you is do not play once lightning is sited nearby. Many courses have a siren that goes off to stop play once the first flash is sighted, but if your golf course does not have the level of automation that doesn’t mean it is safe to play in a thunderstorm or rain. Between the tall trees and the metal golf clubs there are too many tempting targets for that to be anything other than a terrible idea.
